NOW ACCEPTING APPLICANTS FOR OUR 2020 BOARD OF DIRECTORS!

At We Love Philly, we work hard to provide an ownership based education to Philadelphia teens who have been left behind by mainstream institutions.We’re a grassroots nonprofit started by certified PA educators that believe strengthening community ties is the way to close the achievement gap in Philadelphia. We’re looking for enthusiastic and qualified individuals to join our Board of Directors to help strengthen our family ! Specifically, we’re looking for interested individuals who: 

  • Believe in the power of ownership to change lives and strengthen schools and communities;
  • Bring skills or talents that will help us advance our mission (e.g., accounting/finance, education / teachers, youth development, counseling, fundraising and resource development, legal, marketing, community activism, etc.);
  • Can attend and actively participate in Board and committee meetings (average one per month); and
  • Will actively participate in Volunteering and being a mentor to our students.

Carlos Aponte, President, PA Certified History Teacher

Carlos is a lifelong Philadelphian who traces his culture to the Island of Puerto Rico Carlos’ background is in Secondary Education with a concentration in African American and American History. He is currently an educator at One Bright Ray Community High School(OBRCHS). He has worked there for the past six years and has brought many extra curricular activities to the school community. Carlos has partnered with Students Run Philly Style(SRPS) to bring the program to OBRCHS. He managed the program for five years and mentored over 30 students to participate in the Broad Street Run. After SRPS Carlos decided to create his own  program that teaches volunteerism, entrepreneurship, and meditation to youth left behind by mainstream institutions. The program is called We Love Philly and after completion of the program students can earn credits towards their high school diploma. Carlos also creates and produces, with his student, The We Love Philly Podcast. The podcast explores volunteerism throughout the city and features organizations that are making the city a better place to inhabit. Carlos also sits on the board at The Penn Treaty Museum, which is located at 324 Richmond Street, in Philadelphia PA.

 

Taylor Davis, College Success Coach, Hopeworks

Taylor Davis is a College Success Coach at Hopeworks, a youth development nonprofit providing opportunities for young adults while implementing trauma-informed practices. Taylor’s ultimate goal in life is to empower young people to pursue their dreams by providing them with the support and resources necessary to succeed, and by restructuring the system that robbed them of these supports in the first place. She believes in the power of community and preparing the next generation to be better than the one before it. Taylor has presented at several conferences, facilitating workshops on violence prevention, LGBTQ+ youth advocacy, and healthy relationships. She has dreams of one day becoming a leader in education reform. Taylor graduated from Temple University and lives in Francisville with her partner, cat, and 20+ plant babies.

Cherish Green, Student, One Bright Ray Community High School 

Reigning from northeast Philadelphia, Cherish Green is an eccentric, old soul, extending her compassion, generosity, and overflowing love to anyone in her reach. A student at One Bright Ray Community High School, Cherish has aspirations of graduating and furthering her education at Morgan State University. Cherish is a Sexual Abuse Survivor’s advocate, member of We Love Philly’s board, associate of Mother’s In Charge Inc, and many, many more. Green’s ultimate goal in life is to inspire young and old to embrace their natural selves and stand up against things that oppose that idea. As a person who experienced extreme bullying, it is her mission to spread peace and good energy upon every room she enters, in hopes of making everyone feel comfortable. Cherish has attended multiple conferences, marches and protests for peace, competed in speech competitions where she won first prize,  and advocates for mental health in poverty stricken communities. After graduation, Cherish plans to reside in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse neighborhood and practice law.

 

Cory Zoblin, Treasurer, PA Certified English Teacher 

For the last decade, Cory Zoblin has been teaching high school English in Philadelphia. After majoring in Sociology in college, he became interested in fighting inequality in the United States and decided that the classroom would be the best place for him to do so. Since graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Teacher Education Program, Cory has focused on blending traditional academics with outside-of-the-box and relevant methods by which to engage students. Currently, Cory teaches at an alternative high school in Kensington for over-aged, under-credited youth who are seeking their high school diplomas.

 

Francesca Marcus Diefenbach, MAIS, MA, LMFT

Francesca is a licensed marriage and family therapist in New Jersey and currently works in private practice at Haddon Counseling Center, LLC. Francesca specializes in working with couples and families and believes that good mental health is rooted in healthy relationships and healthy families. Francesca has specialized training in providing LGBTQIA affirmative therapy with individuals and their families. As the founder of Haddon Counseling Center, Francesca’s mission for HCC is rooted in anti-racism, anti-oppression, diversity ethics, and social justice. Francesca’s clinical experience includes working in psychiatric settings, school-based counseling centers, and community mental health clinics. Francesca has earned graduate degrees from Oregon State University and La Salle University. In her free time, Francesca loves spending time with her family, taking Pilates classes, and hanging out at the beach. Francesca is a graduate of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the Myrna Brind Center for Mindfulness at Jefferson University and works hard on maintaining her meditation practice.

Nisiar Smith, CEO, Well Kept Money

Nisiar Smith is a dedicated, passionate, and well-respected finance professional who is a driven leader with a goal to positively influence others. Created from his experience working for a commercial bank, Nisiar Smith – CEO and Founder of Well Kept Money has made it his goal to educate the low-income communities on finances through his nonprofit financial literacy organization. Well Kept Money mission is to help enhance the minds of individuals by teaching the fundamentals of personal finance with the intent of inspiring innovation amongst the community. Nisiar is also the Founder of Philly Phinancial Literacy Week, a weeklong celebration of financial education workshops that take place in recreation centers across Philadelphia touching multiple communities.In any environment he is able to make a mark through hard work, a vibrant personality and winning or growing in every situation.
