Using Community Service to Feel at Home in Philadelphia Jun 17, 2019

Jamie Fox and Addye Susnick were both born and raised far away from the Philadelphia area. What eventually united them was a common goal they shared; being of service to others. Through a fellowship with the non-profit organization Repair the World Philadelphia, these two beautiful souls were able to meet. Repair the World’s signature program, Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods in Baltimore, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York City. In Philadelphia  Jamie and Addye work closely with local nonprofits to create authentic and impactful volunteering and education opportunities—and they use peer-to-peer outreach and recruitment to engage other young adults in volunteering and learning. This organization has been with my students and I since the beginning of our program. They have recommended and facilitated many volunteer opportunities for us. It’s amazing how fast these two have integrated themselves into the local community and have already experienced locals calling out their names when they see them on the streets !

We recently volunteered with Repair The World Philadelphia at the Anti Defamation League’s Walk Against Hate. We had the opportunity teach about and facilitate the creation of care packages to be delivered to Project Home after the event was over. The event itself was so much fun. We got to experience first hand the perks of volunteering. There were free tastykakes and water for everyone, free games, magic shows, and we got to network with future organizations to volunteer with. Never underestimate the amount of genuine people you will meet at a volunteer event. My students also created a banner and walked to raise awareness about sexism. They also were blown away that the walk raised over 300,000 dollars to secure justice and fair treatment to all through the Anti-Defamation League.
